“Angela Patton’s ‘Daughters’: Inspiring Documentary on Father-Daughter Bonding Set to Premiere on Netflix”

Four young girls prepare for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers, as part of a unique fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C. jail. Daughters premieres on Netflix, August 14th.

Angela Patton has dedicated her life to empowering Black girls through her leadership at Girls for a Change, a nonprofit committed to closing opportunity gaps and fostering future leaders. She focuses on creating initiatives that directly address the needs of her community, such as Date with Dad. This program aims to strengthen the bond between fathers and daughters, especially in families affected by incarceration.

Date with Dad includes therapy sessions for fathers leading up to a special event: a daddy-daughter dance. Here, dads exchange their usual attire for semi-formal clothing and reunite with their daughters, creating a touching moment of familial closeness.

Following Angela’s impactful TEDWomen talk about Date with Dad in 2012, filmmaker Natalie Rae approached her to capture the program on film. Recognizing the opportunity to amplify its impact, Angela agreed. Over eight years of filming, they collaborated on “Daughters,” a compelling documentary soon to be released on Netflix.

“Daughters” garnered critical acclaim at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award in Documentary Competition and was named Festival Favorite. Co-directed by Rae and Angela, with Kerry Washington among its executive producers, the film promises an intimate portrayal of resilience, love, and the transformative power of family bonds.
